Making Air Fryer Hot Dogs in the air fryer is really quite simple. A comprehensive recipe card with all of my advice, a printable version, and a pin it button to save it for later can be found at the bottom of this page, so make sure to read it all the way through.

  • Prep Hot Dogs : Prepare the hot dogs by placing them on a cutting board and making incisions in each of them. Each hot dog has four or five slits on top. Instead of cutting all the way through, use the knife to crack the surface just enough.
  • Air Fryer : Cook the hot dogs in an air fryer set at 400 degrees for six minutes.
  • Buns: Take one hot dog out of the air fryer and put it on each bun. After returning the hot dogs to the air fryer, cook them for a further one to two minutes.
  • Serve: Sprinkle your preferred condiments on top and dig in!

Air Fryer Hot Dogs FAQ’s

How Many Hot Dogs Can I Cook in the Air Fryer?

  • You can use as many hot dogs as your air fryer can accommodate, although the recipe calls for four. It’s crucial to ensure that the hot dogs are arranged in a single layer without any overlap. To cook and achieve that lovely charred surface, they require a lot of space on all sides.
  • Six hot dogs will typically fit perfectly in the air fryer basket if you are serving a family of six, like I am.
  • Most air fryers, in my opinion, can accommodate six to eight hot dogs. You can probably only fit four hot dogs in the air fryer basket, so once you get them into the bun, you’ll probably have to cook them in batches.

Hot Dog Topping Ideas

  • Mustards for ketchup: dijon mustard, honey mustard, spicy mustard, and yellow mustard
  • Pickle relish, either sweet or dill
  • Chilli Cheese Dogs: Make this homemade chilli dog sauce, use bottled chilli, or utilise leftover chilli. Add shredded cheddar cheese and chopped white onion on top of each one.

Variations & Substitution Ideas

  • Hot Dogs : Feel free to use whatever hot dog you enjoy! All types of hot dogs, including smoked sausages, beef brats, cheese dogs, beef, turkey, and bread length hot dogs. To ensure that the brats or smoked sausage are well warmed, you might need to extend the cooking time.
  • Hot Dogs Wrapped in Bacon : Try encasing a piece of bacon around each hot dog. The bacon’s level of crispiness may require a minor increase in cooking time.
  • Chilli Dogs : Top the hot dogs with cheese and chilli (homemade, leftover, or canned) after placing them in the buns. To allow the cheese to melt and turn gooey, put them back in the air fryer.

Recipe Tips

To help you successfully recreate this recipe in your own kitchen, here are some of my helpful recommendations ♥

  • Hot Dog Buns & Hot Dogs : Applying melted butter to the hot dog buns has a significant impact. Although I have cooked these hot dogs without brushing the buns with butter and they still turn out delicious, doing so gives the buns a lovely buttery flavour and keeps them softer. For optimal flavour and outcomes, pour melted butter on the hot dogs, but you can also use cooking spray.
  • Hot Dog Buns : Since some of my children prefer softer or crispier hot dog buns, I usually just cook the hot dogs in the air fryer, reheat the buns in the microwave, and then assemble the hot dogs. I therefore completely omit the process of placing the hot dogs in the air fryer to cook for a few minutes. The buns will become slightly crispy when placed in the air fryer, so if you like softer hot dog buns, steam them in the microwave. I accomplish this by slightly opening the bag and cooking them for 50–60 seconds. This makes the buns incredibly toasty and tender.
  • Slits: Although completely optional, these add a beautiful, crunchy exterior to the hot dogs. As you can see from the photos, it gives the hot dogs a beautiful texture by allowing them to get charred. Cooking them over a campfire or whatever has a similar effect.
